چکیده

"PERMISSION TO REPRODUCE THIS MATERIAL HAS BEEN GRANTED BY TO THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER (ERIC)." In two experiments, subjects haptically examined braille symbols and judged tne number of dots each contained. Subjects who were informed as each symbol was presented during the study interval about the number of dots it contained (Prompting Condition) were more accurate (in Experiment 1) than subjec given no such information (No Information Condition) and were more accurate (in Experiment 2) than subjects who were given such information later during the study interval (Confirmation Condition). In each experiment, the superiority of prompting was found to be independent of both the length of the study interval and of the test interval. Several bases for the superiority of prompting are proposed.

Some Bases for Crossmodal Facilitation in Numerosity Judgments

Two experiments were conducted with 80 college students to examine factors associated with the crossmodal facilitation of learning Braille symbols when the visual modality is utilized. In Experiment 1 subjects using the haptic mode were informed of both the structure of the braille cell and the range of dot numerosity of the symbols to be employed. Haptic subjects given this information did as ...

Design and Developing Methodology for 8-dot Braille Code Systems

Braille code, employing six embossed dots evenly arranged in rectangular letter spaces or cells, constitutes the dominant touch reading or typing system for the blind. Limited to 63 possible dot combinations per cell, there are a number of application examples, such as mathematics and sciences, and assistive technologies, such as braille displays, in which the 6-dot cell braille is extended to ...

Occupancy model of perceived numerosity.

Observers saw 234 different pairs of stochastically organized dot patterns and indicated which of the two patterns appeared to be more numerous. All of the data can be accounted for by supposing that the choice of the more numerous pattern is based on the determination of the occupancy indices of both patterns. Each dot is posited to have an impact upon its neighborhood in a constant occupancy ...

Retention of high tactile acuity throughout the life span in blindness.

Previous studies of tactile acuity on the fingertip, using passive touch, have demonstrated an age-related decline in spatial resolution for both sighted and blind subjects. We have reexamined this age dependence with two newly designed tactile-acuity charts that require active exploration of the test symbols. One chart used dot patterns similar to braille, and the other used embossed Landolt r...

Coarse guidance by numerosity in visual search.

In five experiments, we examined whether the number of items can guide visual focal attention. Observers searched for the target area with the largest (or smallest) number of dots (squares in Experiment 4 and "checkerboards" in Experiment 5) among distractor areas with a smaller (or larger) number of dots. Results of Experiments 1 and 2 show that search efficiency is determined by target to dis...
